learly. My friendwas waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airportat three o’clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it wassnowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I tooka taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline of Manhattan for the first time and I stared inastonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. Iwas very upset and started to make some gestures, but the waiter didn’tunderstand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table waseating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights, andhuge crowds of people. I did not feel tired, so I continued to walk around thecity. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, butI wanted to try.

When I returned to thehotel, I was exhausted, but I couldn’t sleep because I kept hearing the fireand police sirens during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. It was a verybig and interesting city with many tall buildings and big cars, and full ofnoise and busy people. I also decided right then that I had to learn to speakEnglish.

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to your office to attempt to determine why I have encouraged so many obstacles to receiving my proper monthly social allotment.【1】The trouble occurred ten months ago and has actually gotten worse, making extremely difficult for me to meet normal financial obligations.【2】The first problem which I had to deal was simply getting a monthly check from you, without having to wait for four or five extra weeks for it. Then two of the checks that have arrived【3】made out for the wrong amount, giving me fifty dollars fewer than I should have received.【4】Another check was mailed to me at an address, which I moved more than two years ago.【5】My letter of inquiry, which I sent to the Los Angeles Office of the Social Security administration, never brought the answer, and when I finally telephoned them I was able to talk with an arrogant clerk【6】from the tone of his voice I could tell that he didn't want to be bothered with me. The final blow is a letter received from your office yesterady in which you state that【7】my allotment is being discontinued, your records indicated that I am legally dead.

Apart from this letter of protest I have at least one other recourse:【8】filing suit against the Social Security Administration, that I would prefer not to have to do.【9】Howevers I am asking you to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that【10】from now on I receive my social security benefits with further obstacles. This letter also testifies that I'm indeed not dead, legally or otherwise.

Sincerely yours,

Thelma Spencer

Passage Two

I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the victory celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. We had not suffered much from the war there. But both at home and at school I had become accustomed to the phrases "before the war" and "when the war's over". "Before the war", apparently, things had been better, though I was too young to understand why, except that there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice -cream and bananas, which I had only heard of . When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant little to me. I did not remember what London was like.

What I remember now about VE (Victory in Europe) Day was the May evening. After dinner I said I wanted to see the bonfire (大火堆) , so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very high, and somehow people had collected some old clothes to dress the un- mistakable figure with the moustache (胡子) they had to put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames rose and soon swallowed the "guy". Everyone was cheering and shouting, and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep it going.

I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said, "Well, that's it, son. Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one."

40. Where did the author live before the Second World War?

A. In London.

B. In a small town.

C. In Europe.

D. In the countryside.

Questions 26 to 35 are based on the following passage.

The method for making beer has changed over time. Hops (啤酒花),for example, which give many a modem beer its bitter flavor, are a (26)_______ recent addition to the beverage. This was first mentioned in reference to brewing in the ninth century. Now, researchers have found a (27)_______ingredient in residue (残留物)from 5,000-year-old beer brewing equipment. While digging two pits at a site in the central plains of China, scientists discovered fragments from pots and vessels. The different shapes of the containers (28)_______ they were used to brew, filter, and store beer. They may be ancient “beer-making tools,” and the earliest (29_______ evidence of beer brewing in China, the researchers reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. To (30)_______ that theory, the team examined the yellowish, dried (31)_______ inside the vessels. The majority of the grains, about 80%, were from cereal crops like barley (大麦),and about 10% were bits of roots, (32)_______lily,which would have made the beer sweeter, the scientists say. Barley was an unexpected find: the crop was domesticated in Western Eurasia and didn&39;t become a (33)_______food in central China until about 2,000 years ago, according to the researchers. Based on that timing, they indicate barley may have (34)_______ in the region not as food, but as (35)_______material for beer brewing.
