Deaf teenagers Orlando Chavez and German Resendiz have been friends since kindergarten(幼儿园). Together the two boys,who go to Escondido High School in California,have had the difficult job of learning in schools where the majority of the students can speak and hear.

Orlando lost his hearing at the age of one.German was born deaf,and his parents moved from Mexico to find a school where he could learn sign language.He met Orlando on their first day of kindergarten.

“We were in a special class with about 25 other deaf kids,”German remembers.“Before then,I didn’t know I was deaf and that I was different.”

“Being young and deaf in regular classes was very hard,”signs Orlando.“The other kids didn't understand us and we didn't understand them.But we”ve all grown up together,and today,I'm popular be cause I'm deaf.Kids try hard to communicate with me.”

Some things are very difficult for the two boys.“We can't talk on the phone,so if we need help,we can't call an emergency service,”German signs.“And we can't order food in a drive-thru.”

Despite their difficulties,the two boys have found work putting food in bags at a local supermarket. They got their jobs through a“workability”program,designed for teenagers from local schools with different types of learning disabilities.

German has worked in the supermarket since August,and Orlando started in November.

“The other people who work here have been very nice to us,”Orlando signs.“They even sign some times.At first,we were nervous,but we've learned a lot and we’re getting better.”

The opportunity to earn money has been exciting,both boys said.After high school,they hope to attend the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York.

1 The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All
high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become "better" people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don't go.

2 But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators.

3 Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. We've been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.

4 Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and through the rosy glow of our remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—maybe it's just the other way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely ones who have Been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up.

Life expectancy rates in the United States are at an all-time high, with people born in 2005 projected to live for nearly 78 years, a new federal study finds.

The finding reflects a continuing trend of increasing life expectancy that began in 1955, when the average American lived to be 69.6 years old. By 1995, life expectancy was 75.8 years, and by2005, it had risen to 77.9 years, according to the report released Wednesday.

"This is good news." said report co-author Donna Hoyert, a health scientist at the National Center for Health Statistics. "It&39;s even better news that it is a continuation of trends, so it is a long period of continuing improvement."

Despite the upward trend, the United States still has a lower life expectancy than some 40 other countries, according to the U. S. Census (人口普查)Bureau. The country with the longest life expectancy is Andorra at 83.5 years, followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore.

Much of the increase owes to declining death rates from the three leading causes of death in the country-heart disease, cancer and stroke.

In addition, in 2005, the U. S. death rate dropped to an all-time low of less than- 800 deaths per100,000.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said, "News that life expectancy is increasing is, of course, good. But the evidence we have suggests that there is more chronic disease than ever in the U. S."

Adding years to life is a good thing, Katz said. "But adding vital life to years is at least equally important. If we care about living well, and not just longer, we still have our work cutout for us." he said.

Who said the only way to learn about a country you can't visit is by reading a book? Dan E
ckberg's television students at Hopkins High School know better. They're seeing countries and learning about cultures with the aid of electronic communications.

Using computers, satellite hookups, and telephone hotlines, Eckberg's students have already followed a team of cyclists 11,500 miles across the continent of Africa, sat atop Mount ilimanjaro, and sweltered in the Sahara Desert.

This winter they'll interact with an expedition exploring Central America in search of the classic Maya culture.

You can join them.

How? By following Eckberg and his class as they track the adventures of Dan and Steve Buettner, two world-class bicyclists from U.S.A. Starting last month these two bicyclists, joined by archaeologists and a technical support team, are interacting with students via the Internet, the worldwide computer network.

From classroom or home computer, students can make research proposals to the Buettners or the archaeologists at the various Central American locations they've been exploring as part of their Maya Quest expedition.

"We hope that someone will ask a question that can't readily be answered," says Hopkins High School student Barry Anderson. "and through the online activities, an answer will be found — a discovery!"

Having students "discover" why a civilization as advanced as the Maya collapsed in the 9th century is one key goal for the leaders of the Maya Quest expedition. The more important goal is using interactive learning to discover the cause of the decline and compare it to issues we face today — natural disasters, environmental problems, and war.

Ten lesson plans — on topics ranging from the Maya language to the Maya creation myth — have been developed for the interactive expedition.

"Through a combination of live call-in television and the Internet," says Eckberg, "we're hoping to build excitement and engagement in learning in our school."
